Chinese mining giant Bitmain has filed a lawsuit against an anonymous hacker, accusing him of stealing funds from the company account on the exchange Binance in April. According to the lawsuit submitted to the district court for the Western district of Washington on 7 November, the total amount of losses amounted to more than $5.5 million.

The plaintiff claims that a hacker under the name “John Doe” was able to seize control of the company’s account on Binance and used stored bitcoins to manipulate the price Aldona Decentraland (MANA), and then appropriated the profits.

According to Bitmain, the damage caused to the company as a result of these actions amounted to more than $5.5 million in bitcoins and other digital assets. According to the plaintiff, the attacker managed to steal about 617 BTC.

The hacking operation was carried out on 22 April, when bitcoin was trading at $8 935.

The lawsuit also States that the part of the fraudulent scheme, the hacker used the two an account on Binance and Bittrex to buy approximately 2.3 million MANA. The attacker then artificially boosted the price Aldona using owned by Bitmain bitcoin to buy ETH, which are then used to buy MANA.

In the end, the hacker has completed the operation, transferring BTC from Bitmain account “in a digital wallet on Bittrex”.

Recall that according to Group-IB, the damage from targeted attacks on the crypto currency exchange in 2017 and first 9 months of 2018, totaled $882 million.
